As mentioned, laminate floors are fairly easy to install. In addition, they are beginner-friendly, so it is a good DIY project for your home, even when you lack extensive carpentry or home improvement skills. 

How to install laminate flooring yourself:

Step 1: Remove all furniture in the room that you’re working in.

Step 2: Measure your room to know the approximate amount of flooring you need.

Step 3: Uninstall existing flooring if there is any.

Step 4: Sweep or vacuum the floor and clear all debris.

Step 5: Lay down an underlayment before installing. This is not a requirement but the underlayment adds a protective layer to your flooring against moisture.

Step 6: Secure the underlayment with tape.

Step 7: Choose the orientation style for the room. You can match it with the orientation of the floors in other parts of your house. But if you don't have a reference, you can lay down some laminated flooring without adding glue and see which orientation you prefer.

Step 8: Once you have chosen the style you want, lay it down near a wall as a starting point. Add about a quarter-inch spacing between the planks and the wall. The space allowance is needed in cases where the laminated plank expands due to temperature changes.

Step 9: Measure and cut floorings so that they fit perfectly on your floor.

Step 10: Install your flooring.

For snap-lock type of installation:

Lay down the first row of planks. Insert the tongue on the second-row plank to the angle on the first row of planks and snap into place. You don't need glue for this. You may use a hammer to tap the floorings into place. Double-check if each plank is tight enough to avoid starting over.

For glue-down type of installation:

Before laying down the first row, check your floors for signs of sealant. To check, pour down a small amount of water and observe it. If it stays in a mini puddle, then you may need to remove that sealant. On the other hand, if it gets absorbed into your floor, then you are good to go.

Choose the right glue that fits your flooring, check the website for appropriate adhesive, or ask for recommendations from the employees at a store. Once you have your glue, lay it down on the floor and use a tool to spread it at an even height, and gradually install each laminated plank.
